Funeral Arrangements for Mrs. Muriel Walker Manning, Aunt of Bishop Adam Jefferson Richardson

We are saddened to announce the passing of Mrs. Muriel Walker Manning, aunt of Bishop Adam Jefferson Richardson. Homegoing services for Mrs. Manning will be held Friday, May 14, 2010 at 11:00am at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, 3000 N. 29th Street, Tampa, Florida 33605 (813) 248-6125/(813) 247-1921 (fax). The Rev. W. James Favorite, Pastor of Beulah Baptist Institutional Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Muriel Walker Manning, formerly of Walnut Street, West Tampa and E. 18th Avenue, passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2010 at a local Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, of 44 years, John H. Manning and five of her nine siblings.

Mrs. Manning is survived by 2 brothers, Charles Walker of Tampa and Mordecai Walker of St. Petersburg, FL; 2 sisters, Curtiss Walker Wilson, Tampa and Mary Walker Scott of St. Petersburg, FL; nieces, Colleen Shannon (Ralph), Atlanta, GA, Linda Arenas, Tampa, Colleen Porter, Chicago, IL, Gail Arnold, Tampa, Victoria Pinder (Earnest, III) Tampa, Bernardette Brooks, St. Petersburg, Julia Orr (Eric), Atlanta, GA, Verna Love(Larry), Denver, CO and Lillian Wilson Longs, Tampa; nephews, Bishop A. J. Richardson (Connie), McLean, VA, Herbert Richardson (Angela), Tallahassee, FL, Robert Walker (Susan), Denver, CO, Calvin Walker, Jr. (Dorothy), Denver, CO, Clarence P. Wilson, Jr. (Sanjo), Tampa, FL, Andrew Walker, Atlanta, GA and Wyatt Walker, Tampa; several grand and great grand nieces and nephews; a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends among whom are the Walker, James, Rembert, Kemp, King and Morris families. She is also survived by several special friends including, Dr. & Mrs. Glinton Darrien, Cora Williams, Lovie Jordan James, Geraldine White, Arnold & Doris Dubose, Julia Edwards and Minister Carnell Upshaw.

A native of Ft. Valley, Georgia her family came to the Bay area in the early 20′s; residing briefly in Port Tampa before moving to the Keystone/Citrus Park community where she and her nine siblings were raised. She attended the one teacher Citrus Park Colored School, Booker T. Washington Jr. High and graduated from Middleton High School, Class of 1936. During WWII, Mrs. Manning worked in a New Jersey government military uniform factory, returning to Tampa in the late forties. She received a B.S. Degree in Home Economics from Florida A & M University and was employed by the County public schools for 27 years as a lunchroom Manager at Booker T. Washington, an Institutional Foods teacher at Leto High, and a sixth grade teacher at Dunbar Elementary.

At Beulah, she served as a Deaconess, a choir member, a Sunday School teacher, Culinary Team member and with the Women’s Home Mission. She was a charter member of Unity Chapter #164, O.E.S. and the Young-at Heart Seniors’ Outreach Ministry of St. Luke A.M.E. Church.

Home going services for Mrs. Muriel Walking Manning, , will be held Friday, May 14, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W. James Favorite, pastor of Beulah Baptist Institutional Church, officiating. Her remains will repose on Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 5:00 8:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends in the chapel from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Rev. Earl Green of First A.M.E. Los Angeles has gone home to be with the Lord. Here is the information:

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR REVEREND EARL GREEN

Funeral services for the Reverend Earl Green, longtime Assistant Pastor of First AME Church of Los Angeles, who passed earlier this week, will take place in Los Angeles, California, beginning with public viewing on Saturday, May 15, 2010 through Sunday, May 16, 2010 and end with funeral services at the historic First AME Church of Los Angeles on Monday, May 17, 2010, the Family announced. Burial services will be held at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Reverend Green passed away on Monday, May 10, 2010, at the age of 76.

Pastor John J. Hunter along with his predecessors, the Reverend Dr. Cecil L. Chip Murray and Bishop H.H. Brookins will lead the Los Angeles community in celebrating the life of the Reverend Earl Green.

Rev. William H. Smallwood dies at 96

Rev. William H. Smallwood, who pastored a number of churches in the African Methodist Episcopal denomination and spent 25 years as pastor of Allen AME Church, died Friday. He was 96 and lived in West Philadelphia.

He was a graduate of Central High School, Wilberforce University and Paine Theological Seminary in Ohio.

After his formal education was completed, he continued to exert a strong intellectual curiosity. He was well-read in the news of the day and in philosophical and theological subjects. He enjoyed reading the New York Times Book Review every week.

In 1937, he was ordained and became assistant pastor of Mother Bethel AME Church. A short time later, he was appointed pastor of Mother Bethel’s Youth Church.

Besides Allen AME Church, he pastored Union AME in Easton; St. John AME in Wayne; Bethel AME in Lamott, Pa.; Olive AME in Philadelphia; Monumental AME in Steelton, Pa.; St. Paul AME in Elmwood, Pa.; Bethel AME in Bryn Mawr; Ward AME in Philadelphia, and Zion AME in Philadelphia. .

He was twice voted Minister of the Year by the Laymen of the First Episcopal District. For more than 60 years, he served in the Philadelphia Conference of the First District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

He was a two-term president of the Main Line branch of the NAACP and was an active member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. As a youth, he was one of the first five African-Americans to become Eagle Scouts.

Even after his retirement in 1998, Smallwood often made himself available to comfort the bereaved and to celebrate marriages of the many who continued to seek his compassionate understanding.

He is survived by two daughters, Carole Smallwood-Statham and the Rev. Dr. Gloria J. Smallwood; four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
