Mrs. Edith White Ming
Episcopal Supervisor, First Episcopal District

Called Home To Glory

It is with profound regret and sorrow that we announce the passing of  Mrs. Edith White Ming, the Episcopal Supervisor for the First Episcopal District and the wife of  the Right Reverend Donald George Kenneth Ming, the Presiding Bishop of the First Episcopal District.

Mrs. Ming peacefully died in her sleep yesterday , September 6, 2000, in her bed at home in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Ming was taken sick on July 24, 2000, the first day of the Christian Education Conference, the first major event  held during Bishop's Ming's return to the First Episcopal District as its Bishop  She was taken to the hospital that day prior to the start of  the conference.

She later returned home to Atlanta, Georgia for further hospitalization and  treatment.  Yesterday morning,  she lost her battle against illness.

Mrs. Ming was renown throughout the connection for her musical prowess.  The last time many had a chance to see her was at the General Conference held in Cincinnati in early July.  It was there that she and her sister, Episcopal Supervisor, Beverly Thomas, thrilled those in attendance at a Sunday evening musical program with both strong individual solos and a strong duet.

Born in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Ming honed her musical skills at the Temple University School of Music, where she received a B.S.. degree,  following her graduation from Mill Creek Township High School..

She was equally skilled, and at home, on the piano, organ and vocally.  These skills were much in demand throughout the Connectional church.

Mrs. Ming has been tireless in her work with the WMS, and also has been a strong worker in such organizations as the American Guild of Organists, the NAACP,  the Music Educators National Conference,  and the A.M.E. Church Commission on Worship and Liturgy.

There will be  a viewing held Sunday night, September 10, 2000,  between 6 and 8 p.m. at Big Bethel A.M.E. Church at 220 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta.  Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2000  at Big Bethel.  Mrs. Ming's body will lie in state between 11 a.m. and the 1 p.m. service.

A second service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000  at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, at 57th and Summer Street in Philadelphia 19139.

Bishop Ming has asked that flowers not be sent but in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edith White Ming Memorial Fund.  Donations either can be sent c/o Big Bethel at 220 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia or Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, 419 Richard Allen Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. 19147.
