My brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing as the bishop privileged to serve in the 18th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church of which Mozambique is a part.
Our members along with an entire nation have experienced the devastation of terrible flooding which has caused pain and suffering of monumental proportion.
I have been in contact with our members in Maputo, the capitol of Mozambique. They have told me that the damage is most severe in the
provinces north of their location.
However, they have not been able to communicate with the AME's across the country because the road systems are impassable and the telephone lines are down in most of the outlying areas.
At the moment any resources which arrive in Maputo cannot be taken to the rural areas.
When I return to the District during the middle of March, I will get
a first hand look at how our churches and facilities have been affected.
I know that much assistance will need to be provided.
I ask the concern of your prayers as I mobilize a team from Swaziland (which is an hour's drive from Maputo) to go and minister to the people of Mozambique.
When I leave the United States in March (approximately the 17th, I do not have a confirmed reservation but I will be leaving around that date), I will take donations from our churches here.
It is extremely expensive and difficult to carry clothes into Africa from the United States. What will be most effective will be to take money which can be used to purchase materials in Swaziland.
This procedure has worked very well in the past.
This time the magnitude of our gifts will have to be substantial.
Please pray for our members and all the people of Mozambique.
God Bless You
W. P. DeVeaux
