Richard Allen an ex-slave is significant to African Americans in the year 2001 because of his dedication and will to excel above set standards. Richard Allen, a black man, held in bondage, did not allow his environment of hatred and despair to hold him down. We as African Americans in the year 2001 are surrounded by the same pain and struggles of black slaves 241 years ago.

Because Richard Allen was strong willed, he strived to better not only himself but his people. In this process, Allen, turned to the most powerful help in the world. God. Allen created the African Methodist Episcopal Church for his fellow brothers and sisters to find an oasis that could never be disturbed by outside forces.

The same attitude of self-help and determination that Richard Allen had should be exercised in today's hypocritical and stereotypical world. Brothers and sisters of today should work together to improve their African American community. This simple commandment of honoring your brother or neighbor shall bring forth a revived African American. This revival is important to the empowerment of the Negro race.

Richard Allen's legacy has and will have an impact on all races. If Richard Allen could overcome adversity, so can we. The importance of remembering the struggle of our ancestors is the key to bringing the Black people to the peak of religious, political and economic dominance in the year 2001.
