The Philadelphia District is one fourth of
the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the First Episcopal District. The Philadelphia
Annual Conference was established in 1817, the first conference in the A.M.E. Church. The
Philadelphia District was established shortly afterwards.
It is recognized as one of the, if not the
oldest District in the connection and often is called the "Mother
District." The term is appropriate since it contains the Mother Church of the
connection, Mother Bethel.
The Rt. Rev. Zedekiah L.
Grady,
is the Presiding Bishop of the First Episcopal District. The Rev. Joseph
D. Patterson,, is the Presiding Elder of The Philadelphia District, the "Mother District"
of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
