Rev. Sherman A. Gordon picked for
Ebony's "Young Leaders of the Future"
Sherman A. Gordon,
D.Min., pastor of New
Philadelphia
A.M.E. Church in Carson, CA, is recognized in the February 2003 issue of EBONY
Magazine as one of the ‘Young Leaders of the Future’. He was one of 22
persons, 30 yrs and younger, selected from vast number of qualified educated
nominees from across the country.
Dr. Gordon, 30,
following the leading of the Lord and the blessings of then presiding Bishop
Byrd, established the first A.M.E. congregation in the city of Carson in 1997.
In five (5) years the membership has grown from 7 to over 1700. Pastor Gordon
offers motivational spiritual messages to the young and old enabling him to
build bridges and reach across generations, gender, race, culture and
ethnicity that changes, rebuilds and restores lives.
In November 2002,
Pastor Gordon was a guest lecturer at the Robert Schuller School of Ministry
at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA. The topic was “The Importance
of Understanding and Forming a Bond With Your Milieu (Congregation)”. He
returned to the Crystal Cathedral as a workshop leader at the 2003 Robert H.
Schuller Institute of Successful Church Leadership held from January 27 thru
30, 2003. Dr. Gordon taught on “Using Youth in Ministry”.
Pastor Gordon was
recently appointed a member of the United Negro College Fund Clergy Advisory
Board with the responsibility of aiding and offering suggestions for fund
raising, and encouraging young students of African ascent to attend a
historical black college/university. He has also been appointed board member
of the First Church of God School of Ministry, a program geared to train
ministers academically and the practicality of ministry.
Pastor Gordon is a
graduate of University of California at Santa Barbara where he received his
Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Law/Sociology. He holds a Masters of Arts in Religion
from the School of Theology at Claremont, CA and Doctors in Ministry from the
United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
